Just as the numbers on the calendar have a serious 'make-over' we frantically try to give ourselves a boost by making ambitious statements of things to change for the better. Looking back at last year's resolutions is usually not practiced, probably because no suitable strategies were in place to transform those resolutions into reality.

With any goal setting strategy it is important to follow some simple steps to make sure that the 'New Year You' is going to be the success you want to see. Give these 5 steps a try and you will enjoy looking back upon this year's resolutions and be proud of your success.

The 5 steps to successfully set your New Year's resolutions:

  1. Write down your resolutions on paper. Make sure you keep them simple, clear, imaginable, exciting and that you are passionate about those goals. It's important that you are convinced that your goals are achievable so make them reasonable to you.
  2. Don't overdose on resolutions! Choose the 3 most important things and focus your energy on them. Trying to do everything at the same time practically guarantees failure.
  3. Share your resolutions with supportive friends and family. The more people you tell the more will be helpful along the way and cheering you on.
  4. Divide your resolutions into smaller goals, for example 'losing 10 kg in 2007' can be chunked down into '3 kg lighter by April' or 'fitting into size 12 by April'.
  5. Celebrate the small shifts. Reward yourself for your achievements. Treat yourself with a massage or a movie.

Tips and Warnings:

  • Don't stop just because you're not there yet. A baby learning to walk falls down as many times as it gets up again. Persistence is the key.
  • Set yourself some reminders in your calendar of your short term resolutions to keep you committed.
